Message from the Chair

US CapitolIt is my honor to invite you to attend the 9th meeting of the Ionizing Radiation and Polymers Symposium, IRaP 2010, scheduled for October 25–29, 2010 at the University of Maryland, College Park, Maryland. At IRaP 2010, the vital implications of the dynamic and diverse aspects of radiation effects on polymers and radiation-induced polymerization  will be addressed by international experts from academia, industry and national laboratories.

The IRaP 2010 meeting will provide a unique and excellent opportunity to meet and discuss the developments and the new trends relating to the applications of ionizing radiation in polymer chemistry and physics, nanotechnology, biopolymers, and radiation processing. The meeting will also present new and pioneering discussion on the fundamental knowledge and the basic principles of the of the radiation chemistry mechanisms and kinetics for emerging disciplines and applications. (See our list of conference topics and the program for more information.)

The final conclusions of the oral presentations and posters will be presented in a joint plenary session at the end of the meeting. Approved papers will be published in a special edition of Radiation Physics and Chemistry (RPC) after careful analysis of their scientific qualities by RPC peer-reviewers.

Since its inception, IRaP strongly encouraged and supported the participation of students in presenting their research at IRaP meetings. IRaP 2010 will proudly introduce, for the first time the Student Travel Grant Program Awards where as many as four students are reimbursed for their expenses to attend the meeting and make an oral presentation at the plenary sessions. Please see our registration page for details.

IRaP 2010 will also invite the industry to present their products and services throughout the conference.

The University of Maryland is located in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area, which enjoys very beautiful weather in the autumn. The IRaP 2010 program will include a sight-seeing tour of the nation's capitol.

I look forward to seeing you at the IRaP 2010 meeting. You will participate in exciting and dynamic discussions on evolving research topics, and methods for the use of ionizing radiation in polymer science and engineering.
